Letter from James Joyce to WB Yeats, 1912

‘Dear Yeats...’ This letter is a national treasure: it brings two of the greatest figures in Irish literature together. Joyce begins his letter with a discussion of the Italian translation of Yeats’ play The Countess Cathleen. He signs off with a plea for help from the older writer in getting his first book, Dubliners, published.

The sounds you hear are echoes of the ebb and flow of James Joyce’s own voice, reading a passage from his final work, Finnegans Wake.

In the next section you will find out more about the people and places that inspired Joyce’s writing – and you’ll experience Finnegans Wake once more in a very different form.
