James Joyce’s writing began appearing in translation in the 1920s. Ulysses was first translated into German in 1927, and then French in 1929.
The controversy that surrounded the novel certainly contributed to the book’s worldwide notoriety — it has been read by millions of people around the world. Today, Joyce’s works are available in more than 50 languages, including Icelandic, Japanese, Arabic and Malayalam.
